Sotheby’s October 6 Hong Kong’s sale of Important Watches totaled US$7.14 million, establishing Sotheby’s highest-ever total for a various owners sale of important watches. The auction was 79.9% sold by lot and 85.8% by value. Leading the sale was a Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30º Vision No. 2 with mother-of-pearl dial, circa 2004, which sold for US$325,641 against a pre-sale estimate of $200,000 to $300,000.
Asian and European collectors competed enthusiastically for exceptional examples. A Patek Philippe platinum minute repeater, ref. 5078P, circa 2006, brought $310,256.
This Richard Mille platinum split seconds chronograph tourbillon wristwatch with power reserve and torque indication, RM 008, realized $279,487.
A Patek Philippe platinum and diamond-set perpetual calendar chronograph with moon phase and leap year indication, ref. 5971P, circa 2009, brought $271,795.
Rounding out the top 5 was a Richard Mille limited edition alusic skeletonized tonneau-shaped tourbillon, RM 009 Felipe Massa, which sold for $248,718.
